
This is a video that explains how the level up system in Final Fantay XIII works. This new leveling system, called the Crystarium, uses Crystarium points to travel from node to node. It is certainly reminiscent of the sphere grid from Final Fantasy X, but the individual characters stay more unique in how they level as compared to FFX. In FFX, everybody could learn every skill (except for a couple special ones) and activate every node on the board. In FFXIII, each person has their own Crystarium different from the others, and it limits how much that particular person can learn. That way, while everybody can still learn just about everything, it’s more difficult for some to learn certain abilities than others, and every character has their individual weaknesses and strengths. You must learn them and utilize them properly to really do well at the game.

As an RPG-loving gamer who has played every Final Fantasy game available on the Playstation consoles, i naturally cannot wait for Final Fantasy XIII to arrive here in the UK. From the previews and videos/trailers available it certainly LOOKS very impressive. However, i (like many), am worried about the seemingly linear nature of FFXIII.
The Final Fantasy games have always been a subtle balance of early linear plot development and later open-world exploration as the game progresses, but FFXIII is seemingly much more linear than Final Fantasy X, which pushed the traditional balance towards having an entire game of linear story-driven progression broken up by pretty cutscenes. Luckily, there was still enough to do apart from the main story.
Can anyone give me an idea of exactly how linear FFXIII is? What is there to do in the ‘free’ parts of the game?

My Final Fantasy XIII review talks about the linearity in one of the sections. It is more linear than FFX, and other than one (admittedly large) open area where you can do missions, the entire game is linear going from cutscene to cutscene with only limited exploration. I, personally, don’t feel that this ruins the game, but it does give it room for improvement. I still recommend the game.

Thanks jgskuro, i’ve just realised my comment would have been better placed on the review page (duh)!
Do you feel that FFXIII’s length makes up for the reduction in freedom and side quests, item acquisitions etc.? I have to admit though, if it is as linear as suggested, i am disappointed. It seems the good ol’ days of scouring the gameworld for the ‘Knights of the Round’ materia are gone for good…damn.

For me, the game was around 60 hours in length… maybe 20 of it was spent in an area where I felt like I was exploring. It definitely hurts the game, but the linearity of it allows it to tell a really good story. For me it was worth it, for you it might not be. I still recommend giving the game a try, but perhaps you might want to rent it to make sure you like it well enough to spend the full amount to buy it.

60 hours of gameplay sounds pretty good to me! I don’t mind linearity if it isn’t at the expense of gameplay quality or length of the game. Some gamers i know complained at the linear(ish) nature of FFX, but i still managed to clock in over 100 hours gameplay with ease! Then again, there was still exploration and free-roaming elements, such as the airship and fast-travelling around the gameworld.
I am intrigued as to what exactly this ‘open plains’ area is and how large it is/what it incorporates. What is there to do in this area? Are there any vehicles in the game? Are there secondary locations in these plains such as dungeons etc. to explore/loot? These plains seem similar to the ‘Calm Lands’ of FFX, are they?

The open plains area is like an expanded Calm Lands. It’s huge, and encompasses multiple ares. This is pretty much where all your exploring comes into play, and most of the missions as well. This is also where you’ll spend the majority of your time once you’ve beaten the boss. There is one dungeon like area attached to these plains, but this dungeon is really just a series of missions. There’s no good dungeon, unfortunately. Make no mistake, though. The game IS good. If you liked FFX, there’s a decent chance you’ll like this one.
